J. Berard Smith - 1976
...I even had hair back then
Ok - so I picked up the guitar again. And I was playing around with a webcam at the same time - so videos of practices were inevitable, I guess. Surprisingly, they do a pretty good job of showing hand position etc. - but the mic on the webcam is pretty stinky - Oh well - it's just something to do.

It's been about 18 years since I've even touched a classical guitar (literally) - and maybe 24, or so, since I was (youthfully) serious about playing. But, once upon a time I really enjoyed it, so I got myself another classical guitar in late Dec, 2003 (sort of a Christmas present to myself from my recently late wife). My hands are gone (of course) and, though I remember when it didn't, I find the guitar now feels quite foreign in my hands - but I'll play around with a couple of (simpler then - not so now) pieces occasionally, just so I don't go crazy doing only scales and exercises.
...yeah yeah - I'll believe it when I see it as well -- I just said that in case my old teacher - who, given the current state of my playing, will remain nameless out of respect - ever sees this...

Canco trista (l'avia) -- Paco Talarn - from 01-05-06
This is simply a beautiful piece by Paco Talarn - my first thought was "melancholy grasping for lost joy that remains just out of reach" - and I am drawn to such pieces these days. Probably not the best thing for my mental health - but somehow soothing to my spirit or something. You can reach Paco on the French forums at Delcamp.net

I Dream of You -- Per-Olov Kindgren - from 02-23-11
So, I heard this beautiful little piece by Per-Olov the other day and really wanted to take a stab at it. I don't have a score, so this is my first take at faking it. I squashed a pretty critical note :-( and I know I still play it a bit too mechanically - but I'll make a better pass soon. Big "Thanks" to Per-Olov for letting me share it online.

Canço del Lladre -- Miguel Llobet - from 02-05-11
Not great but getting a little bored with it, so I'll call this final for this traditional Catalan folk song arranged by Miguel Llobet and transcribed by Jean-Francois Delcamp. I still don't love some of the phrasing and dynamics and I tried the '81 Hernandez spruce on this pass ... love the sustain and power but hate the highs :-(

El Noi de la Mare -- Miguel Llobet - from 11-16-10
Just another traditional Catalan folk song - you'll probably recognize it as a Christmas season favorite ... well, when well played, that is :-) Anyway, I was just playing around with the video effects in Audition. There's also a YouTube version in the 11-16-10 directory.

Gymnopédie #1 -- Satie - from 09-19-10
I've been playing more tennis than guitar of late - but I promised a friend that I'd record this one - and I haven't posted anything new in a while - so, guess it's a good time to add something new. I've all but forgotten how to record the vids and how I used to clean up the audio - so not great, technically (or otherwise I guess ;-) but it's still just a fun little piece. I also got a little artsy-fartsy with this video - so thanks to Angie Gressett for the image I used for the intro and ending - I think that's one of the neatest pictures I've seen in a while!
  Time: 3:07

JUST FOR FUN... The first time I tried recording this one, the video was of such low resolution and quality that it was fit for only a dream sequence or something - well - maybe a nightmare sequence - ya know - like where someone is having their flesh slowly peeled off, strip by strip, while some goofy old dude sits around in his office in the semi dark playing his guitar... BUT, the audio was nice and clean and I decided that the dream-like quality of the video is sort of a neat visualization for the ambient nature of this particular piece. So I kept it :-) If you have a few, check it out - the audio really is cleaner. The Gymnopédie Dream Sequence (3:03)

Julia Florida -- A. Barrios Mangoré - from 06-03-06
Really just another practice but I think I'm gonna call this final for a while. Those who know me know I NEVER make it through a piece without mistakes - and this, sadly, is no exception --- oh well - still, probably better than the previous pass. I used the Hernandez (spruce) on this one - just because. AND there's a reverb version in the 6-3-06 directory.

Ok!! A couple of friends - Perf De Castro, Chris Volak and I finally got together and formed the PHaS3 Virtual Trio - one in Duarte, Ca. - one in LA, Ca. and one in Houston, Tx. -- All in all, not bad for over 1,000 miles and several days between the parts!! (not to mention 26+ years since I played ANY ensemble stuff). Hope you'll enjoy it - we sure as heck had fun making it!!

La Catedral - Preludio -- A. Barrios Mangoré - from 03-12-06
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this is after 9 or 10 days with it --- but I did take off 2 days in there - once for sore fingertips and once because I just didn't get around to playing that day Ok - enough excuses. It's a bit slow yet and some typical hav fumbles - Oh well, for what it's worth.

Just a second pass at the Andante - trying some different fingerings. This is also probably faster than I'll really do it - and I used the Hernandez but I don't care for the tone on this piece etc. etc. Not really ready for public consumption - but what the heck.

Mallorca -- Isaac Albeniz - from 07-23-07
Another barcarola (go figure) - and I think it's just about the sexiest piece ever written - so here's a better practice pass at this simpler transcription. And HEY! - Kick-kick has a cameo in this pass :-) ... I really think I over played this one - sorry - ALL EXCUSES APPLY
  Time: 8:13

NOTE: I admit it, I made 5 takes of this one on the 23rd. Take 1 was maybe better except that I really blew two notes in the final phrase which pissed me off so I used take 4 for this pass; however, if you can stand things like a poor camera placement, breath sounds, a couple of strange facial tension "monkey faces" and, of course, other bad notes - take one was probably better overall - so here it is as well...

Actually Una Limosna por el amor de Dios - Just a second progress pass - Still VERY POORLY PLAYED - I've been practicing @ 144 and pushing to 160 (and not that/this badly) - but put me in front of this damn camera and even at 116-120 I waffle all over the place - oh well - improving anyway. Lagrima & Adelita -- Francisco Tarrega - from 11-21-05
Really just a little snip from a practice session - even simple things get lost when I don't play them occasionally. I tried to actually respect the Largo and Lento tempo markings (though Lagrima STILL ended up more Andante) -- they seem to just plod along when I play them so slowly. Samson Effect -- Bach, Villa-Lobos & Terrega - from 02-17-05
Got the semi-annual haircut - which has nothing to do with anything except that, when I got home, I did a little run through the Bach BWV996 (Prelude & Presto, Allemande, Sarabande), Villa-Lobos (Prelude #1 Em) and Terrega (Lagrima and Adelita) -- no warm up and a "strange" guitar -
plenty of snafu's but only one verbal expression of disgust,
a grunt or two and a couple of faces -- see excuses on the 02-17-05 page

NOTE: For those who want to avoid the less agreeable parts of the full Samson Effect video, I've made some cutouts - but only .WMV versions because I deleted the original .AVI - sorry -- also, the cutouts sound a bit metallic - maybe the multiple compressions?

UPDATE: Hey! I'm in Pensacola, Fl. now - just because a couple of folks had asked. Great small-town feel and terrific folks.

I'm probably playing more tennis than guitar these days but I still try to keep my hands in a bit - mostly smaller and less "masterful" pieces, of course, but I'll still put up a couple of videos from time to time. Perf suggested getting a Zoom Q3HD to use instead of the old webcam for recording. Soon as I have some play-money, I probably will.

Kicker Vallas on Facebook    Kicker Vallas on YouTube    Kicker Vallas on MySpace
Anyway, if you're in Pensacola, drop me a note or hit me on FB - whatever...

These are really just for fun, family, friends and progress monitoring

I just enjoy plinking around now and then and have no illusions nor aspirations of becoming anything more than a hobby player - but it'll be interesting to see how long it takes to get my hands back - if I EVer get them back. And all this probably represents an experiment in the current state of my memory and concentration functions as much as the condition of my hands. If you play, you'll probably recognize the memory glitches - as opposed to just bad or missed notes - but, if not, there are PLENTY of examples of each so you can practice

freaky 30 yr thing
Ok - how TOTALLY weird is this... An out-take from the Canco Trista video (from 2006) and the old pen & ink done by Jaye Berard Smith (from 1976) ... I think Jaye should feel a little freaked out as well ... I mean - at once - 30 years ago (well - 36 years ago now) - she drew BOTH a present-day representation AND a fairly accurate predictor of some strange future moment!

Annnyway, you can view my picks for the Best of a Bad Lot from the table on the left (I know - I know - only "baby" pieces) - OR - you can puruse the various directories listed below for practices on a particular day (sort of a "practice journal" or something).

You're certainly welcome to comment by email Criticism and suggestions are ok - appreciated, even - but please be nice about it -- I mean, don't bother telling me that the guitar would serve more purpose as firewood than it does as a musical instrument in MY hands . It is simply amAzing how much your (my) hands lose by 18 years of layoff.

Just because several folks have asked about the crazy puppy in the Presto video, you can find info on Kick-Kick's Page

At best, you'll find the videos to be comically entertaining - what the heck, it's something to do - but, please don't expect to be thrilled by my performance - it ain't gonna happen.

And on that note (pardon) ...
I'm REALLY not sure why anyone would want this, but for those that have asked, I've added both an RSS Feed and an mRSS Feed for the "Best of a Bad Lot" entries. What the heck - it was fun to make an RSS feed anyway.

It's almost late Feb, 2004, now but I still have little strength or control in my hands and my finger tips are still SORE AS HECK!!!

 A Final Note (pardon)

Okee dokee!! Welll - I hope you've had, at least, a chuckle or two -- but, in case not, I'll wrap up with a little bit of a silly guitarist's romance novel jaw-wag for those of that peculiar anthropomorphic bent... yeah yeah yeah - you know who I mean --- all those of you who actually NAME your guitars LOL

Anyway - thanks for dropping by - enjoy...

an little time spent with the old GibsonA Few Moments With An Old Friend...

Well - I was in a mood, I guess, when I noticed my old Gibson just sitting over in the corner - all lonely and sad...

Now, perhaps it was just a stray breeze that brushed across her strings but, I swear, I heard her catch her breath. I couldn't tell you if it was a whisper - or just a loud memory - but, for the first time since I really can't remember when, I approached her...

She was a bit pouty and resisted ever so slightly when I first touched her - but age has tempered, in me, the frantic impatience of youth - so I was gentle and let her come to me in her own time... she was soon cradled in my arms and, with only the lightest coaxing caress, singing to me in that soft demure voice I remember so well.

Would that she were warm flesh ...but no... One hand - just my fingertips along her cool slender neck - lightly - more firmly - then lightly again - probing those spots I well knew would make her almost whine - my other hand dancing as it tickled her lower down ...

Willingly forgiving years of fickle and faddish neglect - at times, even disdain - she yielded. Her smooth slim body leaning relaxed against my chest - secure - confident - at once as familiar and as comfortable - as attentive - as exciting as she had always been. Would that she were warm flesh and blood and sweat and breath ...but no... - Still, as we played, we were again and truly two with one heart, in that place where time has no meaning and words are just noise.

We shared so much of my young life, we know each other too well not to enjoy the few moments this later life allows.

...but would that she were warm flesh and blood and sweat and breath - all firm softness and nails with wondrously timid baby-fuzz secrets - and smiles reserved only for me ...but no...

LOL -- hav - '06

HEY!! Well, I broke down and put her in the shop for an overhaul. Greg Tringas of Tringas Music, here in P'cola, did a terrific job and, I had threat... I mean - promised to make a vid when I got her out - so here's a pass at a terrific piece by Andrew York, written for steel but performed, mostly, on classical these days... I plugged her into the q3hd so no tone control as I played (first time she's been plugged into anything or played publicly in - what - maybe 45 years or so HA HA) - and we're still getting reacquainted so not much of a performance (terrible slurs and missed harmonics etc.) - but fun anyway!!
