Thawte Web of Trust
Notary Services

Hi everyone - Horace here (you MAY know me as "Kicker" - or maybe not :-) ... I'm a member of the Thawte Web of Trust and a Thawte WOT Notary. I will be happy to help assert your identity within the Thawte Freemail WOT.

What's that? --- What's this "Thawte Web of Trust" thing?

--- Ahhh, well the short answer is that Thawte offers free personal certificates (X.509) that you can use to sign and encrypt your email communications and/or to identify you to servers that require users to provide identification via X.509 digital certificates. The Thawte WOT is an X.509 Certifying Authority (CA) modeled after Phil Zimmermann's "Web of Trust" concept (1980 - PGP) which replaces the centralized ("top down") PKI system with a network of trust statements made by individuals about one another.

For a more detailed description, you can read more about Thawte's application of this "bottom up", peer-to-peer certification to X.509 PKI.

Anyway - here are some general guidelines if you would like me to assert your ID for your Thawte Freemail cert.

  • We must meet in person (per Thawte's requirements). I'm in Pensacola - and Starbucks on Bayou @ Cardova Mall is a favorite meeting place. You can contact me by email at wotNotary@hav.com - or give me a call at 850-207-7009 - or, if I'm online, you can contact me with a chat request.

  • You should have already gotten your Thawte cert before the meeting. Be sure you remember the Thawte User ID you used when getting your cert because I will need it to make an assertion for you.

  • Bring at least two sets of photocopies of your documents. I'll have to keep one set photocopies. Please be sure these are good copies.

  • Make sure that you bring the original documents that you used when you signed up for your Thawte cert.

    1. That means that if you used your social security number, you MUST bring your Social Security Card (no exceptions) - if you used your US Passport, then I need to see that etc.
    2. Your documents must include at least one photograph ID and it must be a good likeness of you.

Points system:
  • I can assign up to 35 points, based on the strength of the credentials you present:

    • 10 points for a SSN card
    • 10 points for a Tx driver's license
    • 15 points for a US Passport

  • It takes 50 points for you to get your full name installed into your cert.
  • It takes 100 points for you to become a Thawte notary. (read this first)
