Conversion of NeoTracked Page Accesses
to Estimated Bandwidth Consumption

This just calculates several bandwidth values from the JavaNeoTrack daily summary file for a specified month. Of particular interest is the comparison of Average Bandwidth Consumption and (simple) 95th Percentile of Bandwidth Consumption.

Note: Only a simple 95th percentile is calculated - as is done by UU Net - one sample is taken every 5 minutes - the samples for the month are each averaged over 5 minutes (but in my case 3.333 minutes) and then sorted into increasing order. The higest 5% of samples are dropped and the new highest sample (the 95th percentile) is selected as the Bandwidth consumption. (see UU Net's description for a bit more detail) --- I say "simple" because the data are not grouped (but neither are they continuous).

In order to do these calculations, some assumptions are made about conversion from neotrack page counts (as summarized in the JavaNeoTrack daily summary file) and "hits" (in NeoSoft lingo) to bandwidth - namely:

  • 3.333 minutes per sample (432 samples/day - this is how the JavaNeoTrack summary is stored)
  • one "hit" = 7 KBytes (default 7KB)
  • 16 hits/page average (default 16 hits/page so avg bits/page = 917,504 = 114,688 bytes)

I have chosen these a bit higher than I think is actually correct to be on the safe side - for example, looking at my log files, I suspect that a "hit" from my site is more like 5.5KB instead of 7KB). Also, 16 "hits"/page is probably a bit above actual average. Also, the use of 3.333 minute samples instead of 5 minute samples will likely cause some differences between these estimates and actual recorded bandwidth consumption. ON THE FLIP SIDE - I don't exactly know how to estimate the "input" traffic that UU Net talks about - so maybe that could make even my inflated estimates too low???

Anyway - you can use either the form (left below) or the imagemap (right below) to get a report.
